Milk Thistle Research
Milk thistle has been extensively researched and has proven to be safe even in large dosages. It is currently used to treat liver cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, and protect the liver in general.
Milk Thistle contains silymarin, which is made up of several chemicals with silibinin—believed to be the most active as a powerful antioxidant that protects the liver from toxins binding to liver cells, and stimulates liver cells to regenerate. It is generally used to help protect the liver when patients are taking over-the-counter and prescription medicine that can have an adverse effect on the liver. Acetomenophen, or Tylenol, is one example of a drug that is shown to be harsh on the liver.
There are numerous randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled studies showing the benefits of milk thistle’s liver protecting benefits. A small sampling is listed below.
